Do Edibles Expire?
While it might be cool if cannabis edibles lasted forever, the reality is edibles do expire, just like any other food product.
Even the THC itself can break down, though that process is relatively slow. When this does happen, the THC can convert to CBN, a cannabinoid known to make the user sleepy and groggy. Instead of feeling the high you want, you’ll most likely end up crashing on your couch.
The best way to running into any issues is to only purchase an amount of edibles you can consume in a reasonable amount of time. Pay attention to expiration dates on the packaging which will state when the edibles expire. Don’t stock up on brownies and cookies for the next twelve months. Nobody wants to eat a year-old brownie, with or without weed.
How to Extend the Life of Your Cannabis
- If you’re a lighter user and know it will take you a while to get through a package, go for products like gummies or hard candies which last longer than fresh-baked goods. Even those edibles do expire, but it’ll take longer.
- Properly store your edibles – which does not mean stash them in your weed box. For gummies or hard candies, store them in a cool, dry place in a sealed container. For other types of edibles, like baked goods, sauces, and butters, follow the same storage guidelines you would for that food if it didn’t contain weed.
- If you make your own edibles, pay attention to the spoilage rate for your base ingredients. Store your baked goods accordingly and consume them in a timely manner.
