Let’s say you’re in the mood for a weed gummy or cookie, maybe for the first time in a while, and the only thing you have around the house is something you found in a drawer that has clearly been hanging out for a while. You may ask yourself, do edibles expire or does something about the THC in there somehow defy all principles of typical food expiration?

Do Edibles Expire?

While it might be cool if cannabis edibles lasted forever, the reality is edibles do expire, just like any other food product.

Even the THC itself can break down, though that process is relatively slow. When this does happen, the THC can convert to CBN, a cannabinoid known to make the user sleepy and groggy. Instead of feeling the high you want, you’ll most likely end up crashing on your couch.

The best way to running into any issues is to only purchase an amount of edibles you can consume in a reasonable amount of time. Pay attention to expiration dates on the packaging which will state when the edibles expire. Don’t stock up on brownies and cookies for the next twelve months. Nobody wants to eat a year-old brownie, with or without weed.
